Alternative Relationships Relationships are socially sanctioned and controlled in a society. Traditional married relationships enjoy a legal and social status in which they have legally accepted rights and responsibilities to each other. Non-traditional relationships involve variations from the married heterosexual couple. Same gender couples, racially mixed couples, unmarried couples and age disparate couples are alternatives to the traditional couple in our society. These relationships share a social bias in which their relationship is not celebrated and is without social and in some instances without legal status. Individuals in alternative relationships have unique issues regarding rights and responsibilities to each other. These individuals often struggle with acceptance of their relationship in their families as well as in the broader society. |
